1
Q

Preformationism

A

Prior knowledge of prenatal period suggesting that mini people lived in sperm and started to grow when the sperm met the egg.

Q

Touch

A
  • First system to function
  • Foetuses curl fingers and toes when touched
  • Initially move away from the source of facial touch but later they move towards it
  • Touch their own face more than any other part of their body

14
Q

Chemosensory system (taste and smell)

A
  • Substances in amniotic fluid can stimulate the foetus’ chemoreceptors
  • Molecules from mothers diet, perfume on skin and concentrations of airborne substances can pass into amniotic fluid via bloodstream
  • Show a preference for sweet substances over bitter

Q

Visual System

A
  • Very little visual stimulus
  • Eyelids are fused shut shortly after development and don’t open until 5-7 months of gestation
  • Eyes sometimes make slow, rolling movements or fast jerky movements

16
Q

Auditory System

A
  • Development begins at about 6 weeks
  • Almost all frequencies can be heard
  • Respond to some sounds by moving their limbs
  • Startle and empty their bladders to loud sounds
  • Maternal voice is most prominent and intense
17
Q

Risks to foetal development

A

1-Chromosal defects

2- Exposure to teratogens

18
Q

Chromosal defects

A
  • Whole chromosomes/parts of them are missing or duplicated
  • Usually caused by an error in the separation of chromosomes during melotic division
  • Increased risk of defects in advancing maternal age
19
Q

Exposure to teratogens

A
  • Environmental agents, diseases and physical conditions
  • Alcohol can lead to foetal alcohol syndrome (facial defects and behavioural problems)
  • Smoking consequences = weighing less than non-smoker babies, premature detachment from placenta
  • Maternal stress during pregnancy has been linked to negative birth outcomes
