The Sadducees

A

-Believed in strict interpretation of Mosaic Law.
-They were in the upper stratum of society. Elite hereditary lineage.
-They were the conservatives in society. They don’t believe in resurrection, and they controlled the Temple.

The Pharisees

A

-They had a flexible attitude toward Jewish Law.
-They had support from most of the Jewish population.
-They believe in life after death.
-Were definitely more accepting of Jesus than the Sadducees.

A

-They believed the end days were imminent
-Semimonastic community near the dead sea.
-Separated from most people. anticipated the end of the messianic age.
-Teacher of righteousness.
-The Essenes were more accepting of Jesus than the Zealots.

What did humanists believe?

A

-Human worth came from the capacity of individuals to reason and to shape their character and life according to rational standards.
-There is no authority higher than reason.
-The goal is to get people to be active citizens and to develop a strong intellectual capacity.
-History has no ultimate end and no ultimate meaning. Periods of happiness and misery repeat themselves endlessly.

A

-God cares for everyone. He wants people to behave righteously and to enter heaven.
-The goal of life is to attain salvation.
-Humans are naturally corrupt but with God humans can undergo a moral transformation and become loving, good, and free.
-There is meaning to everything.
