Lecture 1: Neurons And Glia Flashcards
1
Q
What are Glial cells?
A
- cells that support neuronal function
- are more numerous than neurons
- have several different types and functions
2
Q
What are three shapes of neurons in the brain?
A
- unipolar
- bipolar
- multipolar
3
Q
What is a unipolar neuron?
A
A neuron with one fibre extending from the soma
4
Q
What is a bipolar neuron?
A
A soma with 2 extensions (axon and dendrite)
5
Q
What is a multipolar neuron?
A
Has a soma with one axon and many dendrites
6
Q
What are the three functions of neurons?
A
- motor
- sensory
- interneurons
7
Q
How do we tell neurons apart? (Other than their structure)
A
- chemical make up (what NTs they can make)
- soma shape (pyramidal or granular)
8
Q
What is the difference between Schwann cells and oligodendroglia?
A
- Oligodendroglia, found in the CNS
- Schwann cells, found in the PNS
9
Q
What is the job of Schwann cells and oligodendroglia?
A
The myelination of neurons
10
Q
What are three types of glia?
A
- glial cells
-Astroglia
-Microglia
11
Q
What do astroglia do?
A
- aid in structure of the brain
- helps with chemical regulation
- supports the foundation of the Blood Brain Barrier (BBB)
12
Q
What do microglia do?
A
- functionally, are phagocytes in the brain (not actual glia)
- most active in development and if a brain injury is present
