Lecture 1: Introductory principles Flashcards
What are the 4 systems types?
1: Morphological system
2: Cascading system
3: Process-response
4: Control systems
What is E.W. Lane’s Fluvial System?
A set of balance scales shows sediment size and volume versus river slope and discharge.
More sediment = increased deposition
Lower volume of sediment = increased erosion
When is a river in Equilibrium?
When the sediment size and volume are equal to the stream slope and the ratio between width and depth of the channel
What are the 3 types of equilibrium?
1: Stable equilibrium
2: Unstable equilibrium
3: Neutral equilibrium
Where are thresholds found?
1: At the point of an equilibrium change
2: The threshold marks the point where a system shifts from one state to another.
