Lecture 1: Introduction Flashcards
What is earth science?
Science dealing with the physical constitution of earth and its atmosphere
What sciences make up earth science?
Meteorology oceanography geology astronomy
What is the scientific method?
Question Data Hypothesis Predictions tested Incorrect hypothesis discarded Passing hypothesis becomes a theory
What assumption does the scientific method operate under?
Nature behaves in a consistent and predictable manner that can be understood through careful and systematic study
What does it mean for something to be scientific?
Testable, based on data and observations, and the data is public and reproducible.
What is a theory?
A scientific idea that has an excellent chance of being true
Are theories ever considered to be true why or why not?
No in science nothing is considered to be proven
Describe the earth as a system
A combination of interrelated and interdependent parts for being a collective whole
What systems operate within earth? Briefly describe them.
Hydrosphere (water)
Atmosphere (gas)
Biosphere (living things)
Geosphere (solid rocky earth)
What is density?
Mass/volume
What factors affect density?
Temperature and pressure
What is the earth system driven by?
Heat (energy)
What are the two sources for heat?
Internal and external
Describe external heat.
Source is the sun drives the atmosphere and hydrosphere
Describe internal heat
Moving from hot interior to cool exterior drives geologic processes
What is the age of the earth?
Approximately 4.55 billion years old
What is the age of the universe?
approximately 13.7 billion years old
