Lecture 1 : Introduction Flashcards
Intro to digital mapping
What is space?
Boundless three dimensional; extend in which features /phenomena occur, has relative position and direction, fundamental concept of mapping
What are the four dimensions of space
x, y, z, t
What is a map?
Map sib the representation of features of phenomena on or near the Earth’s surface
Maps produce spatial knowledge…(order)
Data -> Knowledge -> Information -> Wisdom
Hard copy maps
Exist in physical form
Digital maps
Exist in electric form (GIS Data)
Mental maps
Exist in mind
Geospatial technologies do what?
Transform the space into data then information and knowledge
Name some major geospatial technologies
GIS, GPS, Surveying, Spatial, etc.
What is GIS?
Any information system that’s collects, stores, edits, analyzes, shapes and displays geographic information
What are the levels of GIS? (top to bottom)
Customers, streets, parcels, elevation, land usage, real world
Geospatial technologies can…
Generates, acquire, store, organize, process and communicate geospatial data and knowledge
How is GIS used in our daily lives?
Applied to socio-economic/environmental problems, supports both short and long term decision making, mostly used by governments/businesses, used by service a lot
What is Esri?
Generates, acquires, stores, organizes, processes, and communicates almost any type of geographic data, made for trained users
What is Google maps?
Used for limited analysis and communication of geographical data (routing, POI, search, etc.)
