Lecture 1 (intro to mmi) Flashcards
1
Q
Size of organims from smallest to largest
A
- prion
- virus
- bacteria
- fungi
- parasites
- mammals
2
Q
Gram negative vs gram positive
A
- Gram negative bacteria has an outer membrane which prevents stain from entering. (Red/ pink)
- Gram positive bacteria has no outer membrane and multiple layers of peptidoglycan which absorbs stain. (Purple)
3
Q
How are bacteria named in this course?
A
Genus, species.
4
Q
5 categories of microbiology
A
- Bacteriology (bacteria)
- Virology (viruses)
- Mycology (fungi and yeast)
- Parasitology (protozoa, worms, ectoparasites)
- Immunology (immunity)
5
Q
Prokaryote vs Eukaryote
A
- Prokaryote is a bacteria. Small, unicellular. No nuclear membranes. Binary fission
- Eukaryotes are fungi, plant cells, human cells. Genetic material in a nucleus with a nuclear membrane.
6
Q
Acid-fast stain
A
Used for bacteria with waxes in their cell walls. Used for mycobacteria (TB)
7
Q
Coccus bacteria
A
- Round
- staphylococci remain in clusters
- streptococci remain in chains
8
Q
Bacillus bacteria
A
- Rod shaped
- Coccobacilli are singular, short, oval cells.
9
Q
Spiral bacteria
A
- Curved
- Vibrio are short curved rods.
- Spirilla are wavy, loose curves
- Spirochaete are tightly coiled but flexible
