Lecture 1 - Intro Flashcards
What is manufacturing
takes raw material and turns into end product
When are manufacturing organisations viable
if they provide satisfaction to their customers good value for money good product high quality it works
What is a customer
user of the product other parts of same factory other parts of the same company other companies public
What is the satisfier
product - can be physical or virtual or service
What are three economies sectors
primary - agriculture raw materials
secondary - industrial manufacturing
tertiary - service
What is the industry contribution to the global economy
30% China - 40% South Korea 39% Germany 30% UK 19%
What is manufacturing technology
a piece of equipment
What is a manufacturing system
a group of resources - many pieces of manufacturing technology
Element + attributes + relationship = system
a system is a group of elements, connected in an organised manner, to achieve a logical objective or purpose, by working together to a common objective
How has manufacturing developed
skill of workers using machines more important issue then machinery (industrial revolution) technology was developed then the environment (Henry Ford) the system was developed production lines
What is modern manufacturing all about
optimising your system to get the best out of the technology
getting rid of all waste
What are the three features of technology
Operating capability - how big, how many per unit time
Operating parameters - how fast can cutters go, how hot can it get, how deep a hole can it drill
Operating costs - energy consumed, cost of consumable (lubricant), environmental impact
What could the elements in a system bye
people machines processes
parts have attributes, input output constraints
What are the recent society demands in manufacturing
increase in product variety decrease product quantities increase in customer expectations reduction in time to market use new or better materials facilitate global production
To manage manufacturing demands an organisation need strong
physical structures (factories, equipment) virtual structures (management and control systems)
Give examples of physical structures within an organisatons
contents of the factories or the plant
workstations, machines, flow lines (belt conveyors) material handling devices
Give examples of virtual structure within an organisaition
the management structure of the organisation
procurement, operations, sales and marketing, human resources, IT
What are the 5 Ps of POM
Product and Operation Management
Product Plant Process Programme People
What is the product in POM
interface between marketing and production an agreement must be reached on performance and aesthetics quality and reliability quantity selling price/production cost delivery date or lead time
what is the plant in POM
provides tool to manufacture the product, must match all needs and continue to do so POM must consider possible future demands layout of buildings and facilities performance and reliability maintenance safety and social responsibility
What is the process in POm
combination of people skills and equipment to manufacture the product
to achieve and optimum situation consider
available capacity and skills
form of production
plant layout
safety and maintenance
costs
What is the Programme (resource planning) in POM
System which organises and controls production operation, generates timetables and procedures for purchasing production maintenance cash flow storage and transport
What is the people in POM
Employees, management suppliers customers
important to be successful
link virtual and physical structures
