Lecture 1 - Information Processing Flashcards
1
Q
What is Information Processing?
A
- Everything that the brain does!
- Thinking
- Analysing
- Processing
- Remembering
- Problem Solving
2
Q
What is the Modal Model?
A
- Common elements of proposed theories
- Sensory Memory
- Working Memory
- Long Term Memory
- Encoding
- Retrieval
3
Q
What is the Sensory Memory?
A
- Information coming in through the senses
- Duration =
1/2 second visual
3 seconds for auditory i
4
Q
What is the Working Memory?
A
- Any time you are actively thinking or calculating
- Organises, rehearses and discards information
- Capacity = 7+-2 rule
- Duration = 20 - 30 seconds
5
Q
What is Long Term Memory?
A
- Long term storage
- Everything we know
- Memories, skills, procedures
- Duration = none known
- Capacity = potentially limitless/not known
6
Q
What is Encoding?
A
- The process that moves information from the SM to the WM and on to the LTM
- Achieved through consciously thinking about/practicing
7
Q
What is Retrieval?
A
- Process that brings information back from the LTM into the WM
8
Q
What is the thinking behind the Modal Model?
A
- Popular in the 1980s
- Way of representing the brain like a computer
- Functional model - not biological/physical
9
Q
What are some limitations of the Modal Model?
A
- Suggests processing is sequential (in reality processes overlap and vary)
- Over-reliance on computer metaphor (brain is much more complicated and messy)
10
Q
What is Effortful Processing?
A
- Deliberate focus of attention
- Happens in the WM
11
Q
What is Automatic Processing?
A
- No intentional effort
- Occurs unconsciously
- Happens in SM
12
Q
What are some classroom implications around information processing?
A
- Teachers must be careful not to overload students
- Must build on what students already know
- Allow time for processing and re-engagement
