How was the development of the EU started?
With the establishment of the ECSC (EGKS) in 1951 by benelux, italy, BRD, France
What is important about the EEC treaty (1957)
-focussed on economic integration and common market.
-Most of current institutions established (european council, parliament, CJEU, european commission).
What is the ‘Maastricht treaty’?
In this (amendment) treaty was established that:
-EEC became EC (european community)
-Creation of the European Union.
-Creation of pillar structure (which was later abonded– lisbon).
Does the EU have a constitution?
-No….
-there were plans to do this, however this was rejected in 2 referenda (France, The Netherlands)
What did the treaty of Lisbon establish?
-EC treaty– renamed to TFEU.
-single legal entity (no EC anymore); EUROPEAN UNION.
-EU charter legally binding
-president of EC, bigger rol EP
How can the TFEU or TEU be amended?
Art. 48 TEU– amendment procedure.
-only when ALL MEMBERSTATES APPROVE.
