Lecture 1 Ergonomics Flashcards
Before WWI History
If person could not use the machine, then the person was rejected.
During WWI History
Adjust the machine/ Increase of available info for users such as altitude pilots.
After WWII History
DOD Supported Research, Small equipment to entire systems, Expansion of ergonomics with Human Computer Interaction Field
HFES
Human Factors & Ergonomics Society
Why was HFES Started?
promote the discovery and exchange of knowledge concerning the characteristics of human beings that are applicable to the design of systems and devices of all kinds
IEA
International Ergonomics Association
What is IEA mission
elaborate and advance ergonomics science and practice, and to expand its scope of application and contribution to society to improve the quality of life, working closely with its constituent societies and related international organizations
What is Ergonomics?
Derived from the Greek words ergon (work) and nomos (natural laws). STUDY OF designing equipment and devices that fit the human body, its movements, and its cognitive abilities.
What is Human Factors?
Science of understanding the properties of human capabilities and applying this understanding to the design, development, and deployment of systems and services.
What is A Human Factor?
A Human Factor is a physical or cognitive property of an individual that influences functioning of technological systems as well as human-environment equilibriums.
Name reasons why ergonomics is important
Accidents in the workplace, home, in traffic, disasters, (cranes, planes, nuclear plants etc)
Economic Ergonomics
Improve quality of products= improve well being
Successful HFE?
Enhances performance
Increase Safety
Improves user satisfaction
Simple or Complex
If th esystem (simple or complex) does not work the way a person thinks it should work then the person will be unsuccessful when attempting to use the system
Affordances
Quality of an object, or an environment, that allows an individual to perform an action. (doors, faucets etc)
