Lecture 1: Composition Of Blood Flashcards
Average adult blood volume
4-6L, typically 4-5L for women, 5-6L for men
Blood pH
Between 7.35-7.45 (slightly alkaline)
Blood is composed of about:
55% plasma
44% red blood cells
1% white blood cells and platelets
What is a Buffy coat
The thin middle layer in a centrifuged blood vial consisting of WBC’s and platelets
Plasma consists of:
91.5% water and 8.5% solutes
What types of solutes are in plasma?
Albumins, globulins. Fibrinogen, electrolytes, hormones, non protein nitrogen compounds, nutrients and respiratory gases
What is a formed element
Blood
What stain is used on a peripheral blood smear
Wrights stain
What are Erythrocytes
Red blood cells
What is the most common type of blood cell
Red blood cells (erythrocytes)
What is the lifespan of Erythrocytes?
Approximately 120 days
What are thrombocytes?
Platelets
What do thrombocytes do?
Adhere to blood vessel walls, aggregate, and supply a surface for coagulation reactions
What is the lifespan of thrombocytes
7-10 days
What are leukocytes
White blood cells
What are the 2 divisions of white blood cells?
Granulocytes
Agranulocytes
What are the 3 types of granulocytes?
Neutrophils
Eosinophils
Basophils
What are the three types of agranulocytes?
Lymphocytes
Monocytes
What do neutrophils combat?
Bacterial infection
What do eosinophils combat?
Parasitic infection
What do basophils combat?
Inflammation and immune response
What do lymphocytes combat?
Viral infections
