Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are all the levels of structural organisation?
Chemical, cellular, tissue, organ, system and organismal
Define Metabolism
An assembly of biochemical processes which occur in cells of the body. It is the sum of all biochemical reactions in the body’s cells.
What are the 2 types of metabolic reactions?
Anabolic and catabolic reactions
What happens during Anabolic (Biosynthesis) reactions?
They take smaller molecules and build them up to become bigger molecules (this requires energy)
What happens during Catabolic (degradation) reaction?
They break down bigger molecules into smaller ones (releasing energy)
What are metabolic pathways?
Sequences of reactions that turn compounds from one form to another to produce energy
Do all molecules follow the same metabolic pathways?
No different molecules follow different pathways
