Lecture 1 Flashcards
Measurement levels
Nominal
Ordinal
Interval
Ratio
Nominal
Number only tells category, no ranking
Ordinal
Ordered categories, tells nothing about the differences between values
Interval
Information about differences between points on a scale, equal intervals equals equal differences
Ratio
Same as interval, but with absolute 0
Validity
Extent to which a measure correctly represents the concept of a study
Internal validity
How well the study was done
External validity
Generalize results to other situations
Reliability
Extent to which a variable is consistent in what it is intended to measure
Primary data (5)
- Collected by the researcher
- Raw data
- Better tailored data, matched to the research objective
- More prone to personal prejudice
- More original
Secondary data (3)
- Collected by other agencies
- Ready for analysis
- Cheaper
Selection bias
When the sample is fundamentally different from the sample
How can you statistically test the representivity of your sample
T-test
Chi-square test
