How did the world order change?
- From bipolarity to multipolarity or non-polarity.
- West less powerful, rest of the world on the rise.
What is a revisionist power?
They want to revise things and change international relations.
Example: Russia who wants to restore power and therefore has to revise international relations
What is universalism?
- Post Cold War thinking
- Fukuyama
- Final stage of ideological development
- Idea of universal world market economy, and liberal political system
What did globalisation do to the world?
- Growth of ideological, political and economic diversity.
- More interdependence.
- Growing equality between and inequality within states.
- Resistance to looking alike: differences between countries emphasised
How did the actors in the world order change?
From state to non-state actors (NGOs)
What is anarchy?
Without rule; the absence of a central government or higher authority, sometimes but not necessarily, associated with instability and chaos
What is Balance of Power?
A condition in which no one state predominates over others, tending to create general equilibrium and curb the hegemonic ambitions of all states
What is a collective dilemma?
Problem that stems from the interdependence of states, meaning that any solution must involve international cooperation rather than action by a single state
What is state-centrism?
An approach to political analysis that takes the state to be the key actor in the domestic realm and on the world stage
What is containment?
Basically just stopping the enhancement of potential enemies. CONTAINING A DEVELOPMENT IN ARMS????
What is Deterrence?
The action of discouraging an action or event through instilling doubt, or fear of the consequences the action will have.
Example: economic sanctions to Iran to stop nuclear program.
