Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the two kinds of reasoning?
Inductive and deductive
What is inductive reasoning?
It’s when you look at data and derive some conclusions which are not based on actual proof, but there is strong evidence.
T or F. Science proves or disproves something.
False. Science does not prove or disprove anything. It supports whether or not a theory is correct and does not produce facts.
What is deductive reasoning?
Start with hypothesis, which is based on a theory then we examine data to reach a conclusion.
What is the difference between quantitative and qualitative data?
Quantitative= numerical measurements Qualitative= description
What 2 things do you need for a good hypothesis?
A cause and effect.
What is variability?
It’s the variance of a system. To find the variance of a system you need to check if something is unique to an individual or if its shared amongst individuals.
What is the difference between small and high variance mean?
Little/small variability means that all the data is close to the average.
High/large variability means that all the data is spread out (lots of different observations).
What happens to the variability when you increase the number of individuals?
We lower the variance.
What do we call an individual in a sample? And what does it mean?
A replicate. The more replication means the bigger the sample which means the closer you are to the total population, which makes the results more accurate. Outliers (the ones on the sides) will have a smaller effect.
