Lecture 1 Flashcards
1
Q
How does the cytoskeleton differ between prokaryotes and eukaryotes?
A
Prokaryotes– rudimentary cytoskeleton
Eukaryotes– well-developed cytoskeleton
2
Q
Differences between prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
A
- cells very small–cells larger
- no distinct nucleus–nucleus surrounded by nuclear membranes
- nearly always have a cell wall–cell wall in some (plants + fungi)
- no membrane-bound organelles in most–organelles present
- rudimentary cytoskeleton–well-developed cytoskeleton
- small (70S) ribosomes–large (80S) ribosomes
- usually unicellular–uni- or multicellular
3
Q
What does it mean if an organism is autotrophic?
A
they obtain carbon for growth from inorganic sources e.g. via photosynthesis
4
Q
What does it mean if an organism is heterotrophic?
A
they obtain carbon from organic compounds
