Lecture 1 Flashcards
What are the 3 classifications of dental materials
- Preventative materials 2. Restorative materials 3. Auxiallary materials
Preventative materials
Materials that slow or prevent the onset and progression of disease
Restorative materials
synthetic components that repair or replace damged or missing tooth
Give two examples of restorative dental material
Crown & veneers
Define:
Restorative (temporary) materials
Materials used to restore for a SHORT period of time
Restorative (definitive)
Long term or final treatment
Auxiliary Dental Materials
Materials that are used to fabricate restorations but do not become a part of the restoration. ex. dental stone
Biomaterials
Any material that interacts with biological systems
What is the composition of Enamel
96% inorganic (mineralized) 1% organic 3% water
Where is Hydroxyapatite (HA) found in the body?
Any hard tissue ex. Enamel, dentin, bone
What is the name where Dentin & enamel meet
Dentinoenamel Junction (DEJ)
What cells form enamel
ameloblasts
In enamel bonding, enamel is etched with…?
Phosphoric acid
What is the most beneficial substitution to (HA)
Fluoride which substitues the hydroxyl group to make Flouriapatite
Define Dentin
Dentin is a complex hydrated composite structure that forms the majority of the tooth
Define Odontogenesis
The development of teeth and their supporting structures
Cells responsible for dentin formation?
Odontoblasts
Dentin-pulp complex
Tissue where dentin & pulp chamber meet
What is a distinct feature of dentin
Dentin Tubules
What are the contents of Dentin tubules
Odontoblastic processes & fluid
What is the % composition of Dentin
50% apatite 30% organic (type I collagen) 20% fluid
What is primarily found in Peritubular dentin
Mostly apatite crystals
Intertubular dentin
Dentin found between the tubules
Primary Dentin
Dentin formed by odontoblasts BEFORE tooth eruption
Secondary Dentin
Dentin formed by odontoblasts AFTER tooth eruption
Tertiary Dentin
Reparative dentin, forms in response to trauma
Transparent Dentin
Type of tertiary dentin, characterized by the tubules being occluded w/ mineral
Smear layer
A collective term for any debris left on tooth after tooth preperation
Why is it important to remove the smear layer and what do we use to remove it?
The smear layer can plug dentin tubules. Use acid etching to clean it off
