Prevalence of hearing loss
0.3% neonate

Deaf person
One whose hearing is disabled to an extent that precludes understanding of speech through the ear alone, with or without the use of a hearing aid
Hard of hearing person
One whose hearing is disabled to an extent that makes difficult but does not preclude the understanding of speech through the ear alone, with or without a hearing aid
Cultural/sociological
A deaf person is one who identifies him/herself with a particular group of hearing-impaired people who share a visual language such as ASL and a culture
Audiological
A deaf person is one who has hearing impairment that is usually 90dB or greater, resulting in the use of the visual modality as the primary means of communication
Impairment
Any loss of abnormality of psychological, physiological, or anatomical structure or function
Activity or capacity limitation
Disability
Any restriction or lack of ability, resulting from an impairment, to perform an activity in the manner of within the range considered normal for a human being
Participation or performance restriction
Handicap
A disadvantage for a given individual, resulting from an impairment or a disability that limits or prevents the fulfillment of a role that is normal for an individual
Degrees of hearing loss
Normal: -10 to 15 Slight (child) / normal (adult): 16-25 Mild: 26-40 Moderate: 41-55 Moderately severe: 56-70 Severe: 71-90 Profound: > 90
