Lecture 1+2+DLA Flashcards
1
Q
Atherosclerosis
A
thickening/hardening of arteries due to formation of intimal lesions called “atheromas”
2
Q
risk factors for atherosclerosis
A
modifiable
- Hyperlipidemia
- Hypertension
- Cigarette smoking
- Diabetes mellitus
non-modifiable:
- Increasing age
- Male gender
- Family history
- Genetic abnormalities
3
Q
pathogenesis of atherosclerosis
A
- chronic INF and healing response of the arterial wall to injury
- Lesion progression occurs through interaction of modified lipoproteins, macrophages, and T lymphocytes
- obstruct blood flow
plaques could break off and lead to a vascular thrombosis
can also increase diffusion distance from lumen, weakening of the vessel wall and aneurysm
4
Q
response to injury hypothesis
A
- chronic endothelial injury (ex: hypertension)
- endothelial dysfunction (increased permeability to leukocyte adhesion)
- macrophage activation (SM recruitment)
- macrophages and SM cells engulf lipids
- SM proliferation, collagen and matrix deposition
