Q

what can a file system do

A

Data has to be saved on something. That something has to be organised in a standard way so different computers can use it (Disks, Thumbdrives, memory cards, SIMS etc.)
Therefore, examination of FS, shows how files are saved, deleted, left over residual data can be recovered.

Q

what happens on application level

A
  • An application is a piece of software.
-Software will often save data, for a purpose, but it may not be entirely obvious to a user.
-Sometimes a user will want to add or convert data using an application.
-Your Internet history is saved by the Browser
-The Photograph you took might have the GPS Locations embedded into it.
-You might want to Encrypt data with something a bit beefier than a Caesar cipher.
