Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is the ABC scale
Self reported measure in which their patient rate their balance confidence
ABC scale rate
0-100
0= no confidence
100 = completely confident
Population tested for ABC scale
Elderly
MS
Parkinson’s disease
Stroke
Unilateral transtibial amputation
Vestibular disorders
What do the scores mean for ABC scale ?
> 80% =high level of physical functioning
50-80% = moderate level
< 50% = low level of physical functioning
< 67% = older adults at risk for falling and/or predictive future of fall
TUG cut off score
> 14 sec for fall risk for community ambulator
Elderly subjects > 15 secs =classified as fallers w/ a correct prediction rate of 87%
TUG Cog score
5.56 secs or more from TUG score indicates the patient is more likely to fall when cognitively challenged
What’s the walking speed for a community ambulator?
0.8 m/s
What’s the walking speed to be able to cross the street?
1.2 m/s and above
What’s the walking speed to be a limited community ambulator?
0.4-0.8 m/s
What is the walking speed for a household walker?
0 - 0.4 m/s
What are the MDC ranges for 6MWT?
MDC ranges from 33.47 meters (Alzheimer’s Disease) to 82 meters (Parkinson’s disease)
MDIC: 54 meters for COPD patients
50 meters for geriatric patients and patients with stroke
What balance activities does the Berg Balance scale test?
Static and dynamic activities
What are the score ranges for the Berg Balance test?
Item scores range from 0-4
0 = lowest level of function
4 = highest level function
Highest possible score = 56
Berg Balance Scale cut off scores
Scale does not include gait items
Cut off score 45/56 for independent safe ambulation
Score interpretation:
41-56 low fall risk
40 - 21 medium fall risk
0 - 20 high fall risk
What is MOS SF 20
Measures quality of life
- 20 items
- divided by 6 categories
