Lecture 1 Flashcards
History
Name 3 ways in which TMC has a similar philosophy to Natropathic principles
1:Treat the roots not the branches.
2: Every patient is individual and will respond differently.
3: Ill health is a product of environment rather than one single entity.
Define the Eight principles
8 principles that are a diagnostic method that categorises disease patterns.
Name the 4 pairs from the 8 principles
Ying- Yan
Interior- exterior
Deficiency- excess
Heat- cold
Is Yin hot or cold?
Cold (dark part)
Is Yang hot or cold?
Hot (white part)
What does Yang symbolise in the body?
Activity, circulation and warmth
What does Yin symbolise in the body?
Physical form and moisture for the tissues and cooling.
Yin: blood and lymph. What is yang?
Yang: circulation of blood and lymph
What is excess Yang
Heat
Excess Yang symptoms and signs
Red face, angry, headaches, feeling hot.
Usually long term.
Excess yang tongue
Red (sides linked to liver and gallbladder)
Excess Yang Pulse
Wiry
Excess Yang Aetiology
Stress, actuate inflammation, anger
Nautropathic advice for excess Yang
1: Avoid energetically hot food (alchol, sugar, hot spices)
2: Eat cooling juices and foods.
3: Avoid stress
4: Gentle exercise
Why are deficient in Yin milder than Excess yang?
Because technically there is a excess heat due to the deficient Yin (think balance scales) but the Excess Yang = full symptoms where are Yin Deficiency is milder
Signs and symptoms of Yin Deficiency
Low grade fever, night sweats, dry throat at night (due to Yins link to night) weight loss, flush.
Tongue in Yin deficiency
Red and peeled or dry
Aetiology of Yin Deficiency
Chronic illness, menopause, blood loss, old age, over worked
What should you eat if you are Yin deficiency
Eat warming soups, broths. Any nourishing foods.
What should Yin deficicney avoid food wise?
Energetically hot foods
Pulse diagnosis deficient Yang?
Weak (deficient) , floating but rapid
What organs can become yin deficiency?
Kidney / Lung/ Heart
If the patient has a deficiency in Yin is it more important to nourish Yin or cool yang?
Nourish yin (as its a deficiency) so that this provides a natural anchor to balance Yang.
Any other advice? For yin deficiecy? (not diet)
Sleep more, gentle exercise
Describe excess yin using the balance level
Yin is in excess over the balance line, Yang is in balance
Signs and symptoms of Yin excess
Pale in complexion. Sharp pains due to constriction and constipation due to cold making everything slow.
Another way to name excess in yin?
Full cold
Excess yin tongue
Blue with thick white coating
Excess yin in pulse
Slow and deep
Excess Yin aietology
Cold diet (raw diet) or exposure to extreme cold
Advice for excess yin
Warm foods/ warm baths
Treatment for excess yin
Scatter cold, acupuncture and moxa
Signs and symptoms of Yang deficiency
Tired, chilly, loose stools and undigested food (due to lack of action). Odema, low libado
Yang deficiency tongue
Pale, swollen, wet
Yang deficiency aetiology
Chronic illness, old age, cold diet
Nauthropathic advice for deficient Yang
Warming foods, herbs, herbal infusions, wrap up warm.
What do you do to Yang to treat when in deficiency
Nourish
Define exterior conditions
Surface layers of the body and skin
What is the EPF and how does it effects exterior conditions
EPF= external pathogen factor (viruses and bacteria) which are the main cause of exterior conditions and have acute onset and short durations
Symptoms of exterior conditions
Cold, chills, runny nose, headaches , sore throat
What is an internal conditions?
Related to inner organs where the EPF has penetrated the body. Gradual onset, long lasting
Describe exterior and interior pulse?
Superficial floating/ superficial deep
Describe urine for hot and cold
Scanty and yellow
Frequent and pale
What are the four vital substances
Qi, blood, jingle and Shen
Define Qi
The force that drives and irrigates the body bringing life and health
What 5 organs are Involved in the circulation of QI?
Stomach, spleen, kidneys,lungs, liver
Name 3 functions of QI
Transporting, protecting, warming
Define nutritive QI
Flows in muscles and channels
Define defensive QI
Circulates in muscles and skin
Which QI is blood and Qi? Yang or Yang?
Blood = yin
QI= Yang
