LECTURE 1 Flashcards
Target population
target population refers to all the members of a population who meet a particular criterion for a research investigation
What is an Element?
An element is a single entity of a given population which is not further decomposable
What is a sample?
A sample is a group selected from a polation for investigation purposes.
Participants are members of a sample
What are Systematic Errors?
Systematic errors is the incorrect or false representation of a sample. It is the over representation of one characteristics and the under represenatation of others.
A sample i
Sampling Bias
Sampling bias is said to occur when the selected sample does not truly reflect the characteristics of the population.
Features of probability sampling
Random / Representative Sampling
- the population needs to be precisely defined or have a finite number of elements.
- it cannot be used for a poulation that is too general a category
- every member of the population has a known non-zero probabilty of being selected.
Merits of probabilty sampling
- inferences drawn from sample are generalisable to the population
- ## it reduces the chances of systematic errors
Demerits of probability sampling
- it is time consuming
- it requires alot of effort
- it is expensive to carry out
Merits of non-probability sampling
- it is not costly
- it takes less time to finish up
- it requires less effort
