Lecture 1 Flashcards
Fact
scientific meaning confirmed observation. Can be changed
Theory
Substantiated explanation (supported with evidence). Can be changed but unlikely
Law
A descriptive generalization doesn’t explain why. Laws can be used to make predictions. Laws describe but don’t explain.
Proof
No meaning, because all science is tentative (not finalized / can be subjected to change)
-nothing in science can be proven.
-just evidence to prove something.
Hypothesis
-statement that is capable of being falsified
Scientific Method
No such thing as scientific method. Scientists use different ways of generating evidence based understanding.
Model
A tool (physical, conceptual, or mathematical) that is used to advance scientific understanding of a phenomenon by the user of the tool. (Advancing understanding)
Argument
The use of claims, evidence, and reasoning to convince others. (Something should be supportive)
-Different from explanation to causingly describe what is happening.
