Lecture 1 Flashcards
Ch 1, Ch 32
Cell Theory
- Cells are the smallest unit of life
- All organisms are composed of 1+ cells
- All cells come from preexisting cells
Cell
Ordered internal space separated from environment
Prokaryotic Cell
-Unicellular
-No membrane-bound organelles
-Cell Walls
Eukaryotic Cell
-Uni or Multicellular
-Membrane-bound organelles (Compartmentalization)
-Can have cell walls
Receptor
Detects stimuli or change
Control Center
Interprets stimuli
Effector
Responds to stimuli
Feedback Loop
Receptor -> Control Center -> Effector -> Homeostasis
Homeostasis
Stable, required conditions (maintains structure)
Denaturation
-Loss of biological activity
-Structure is lost, then function is lost
Positive Feedback
Effector is in same direction as stimulus
Negative Feedback
Effector is in opposite direction of stimulus
Organism
Something made of cells
Population
Group of organisms (same species)
Community
Group of populations
