Lecture 1 Flashcards
How do we go from stimulus to response?
Stimulus ->
Perception (Seeing) ->
Memory (recognizing) ->
Decision-making (thinking) ->
Reponse
What is the black box
The brain. The relationship between thoughts, behaviors, and the brain is intricate and multifaceted. These things were for a long time considered something we couldn’t investigate, it was named the “black box
What is Dualism
According to Descartes the mind & body interact in the pineal gland.
The mind is immaterial and capable of thought and consciousness.
The body is material and operates like a machine according to physical laws
What is the general consensus about the mind?
The mind is what the brain does
What is meant by modularity of the brain?
The concept of modularity in the brain suggests that specific regions are dedicated to performing
distinct functions
The 3 features of a module?
- Modules are domain-specific.
- Their operation is mandatory.
- They are informationally encapsulated.
In visual perception what do the following areas do?
- Visual Association Areas
- Inferior Temporal Cortex
- Primary Visual Cortex (V1)
Visual Association Areas: Analyze more complex features like
shapes, colors, and motion.
Inferior Temporal Cortex: Recognizes objects and faces.
Primary Visual Cortex (V1): Processes basic visual information.
In consciousness what do the following areas do?
- Thalamus and Cortex
- Prefrontal Cortex
Thalamus and Cortex: Involved in integrating sensory
information and maintaining arousal levels.
Prefrontal Cortex: Linked to higher-order consciousness, self-
awareness, and introspection
In attention what do the following areas do?
- Thalamus and Basal Ganglia
- Frontal and Parietal Cortex
Thalamus and Basal Ganglia: Modulate attentional shifts and maintenance.
Frontal and Parietal Cortex: Control and direct attention
