Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is the typical extension of the atom ? And volume ?
0.1 nm = 1 Angstrom
V = 1 A^3
Definition of biomaterial
substance that has been engineered to take a form (alone or complex system) which is used, by control of interactions with components of living systems, to direct the course of any therapeutic, diagnostic or preventive procedure.
3 parts of a tooth implant. Why is their connection critical ?
screw-type implant, abutment, crown.
Because they need to withstand very high loads.
What are the alternative to implants ?
Bridge: good aesthetic but grind down 2 healthy teeth.
Partial prosthesis : easy cleaning but interferance with eating and speaking.
Prosthesis : doesn’t wobble and can be removed for cleaning
What are the 2 different surface topographies on an implant ?
Rough part : contact with bone (hard tissue)
Smooth part : contact with soft tissue -> good adherance seals the implant from the oral cavity and shields from bacteria
What is one of the most imporant things in implant design ?
Surface chemistry ! We can alter it depending on if we want interaction with cells and bone / tissue growth.
It impacts protein adsorption !
2 ways of measuring contact angle
static measurement for flat surface, dynamic measurement for a vertical object
Which surface adsorbs more protein ?
hydrophilic -> thus more cells grow on it
What are the 3 aspects to consider for clinical success ?
- surface topography
- surface chemistry
- mechanical properties
