Lecture 1 Flashcards
what is research and what do we use it for?
Reseach is the process of producing knowledge.
Define process
looks at the numbers of sets and procedures.
Define knowledge?
These steps and procedures result in how the knowledge is produced.
We can use research to?
explore, describe and explain.
To know something is there (Exploratory research)
Explore research.
To read information/to start getting an idea (Descriptive research)
Describe research.
When researchers want to explain what is going on/about what the cause and effect is of something (Explanatory/Casual research)
Explain research.
Frequently used research methods are?
Surveys, Observations, Interviews, Correlation, Experiments and programme evaluation
why do we do research?
Research and gain knowledge
Research and problem solving
How many steps are there in the research process?
six steps
Exploring the research topic and formulating research questions and hypotheses is what step of the research process?
Step 1=Planning
Observing people, interviewing people, facilitating focus groups etc is what step of the research process?
Step 3=Data collection
Confirming and strengthing existing theory of refuting and reformulating theory
Step 6=Theory building
Selecting research design, the units of analysis the time frame and the sampling methods?
Step 2=Research methods
Drafting the report for the target community is what part of the research process?
Step 5=Reporting findings
Using descriptive statistics and or/ thematic, narrative or discourse analysis is what step of the research process?
Step 4=Data analysis
Research methods has two main chosen research methods what are they?
Quantitative versus Qualitative
The researcher collects data in forms of surveys pre-or -post testing of an intervention with psychometric tests or the other measurement is it quantitative or qualitative method?
Quantitative method
Define surveys?
Collects data from the number of people at one or more points in time.
Define experiments?
When the researcher wants to test whether or not a certain treatment/condition/intervention can bring about change.
An approach in which the research collects data in the form of words is quantitative or qualitative method?
Qualitative method
Define interviews?
A one on question-and-answer session between the researcher and participant’s.
Define focus groups?
Interviews with a group of people.
Quantitative research methods produce data in ?
In numerical data for statistical analysis.
Define Case studies?
Involves the study of a person or a particular group over a period of time.
Qualitative research method produce data in ?
Descriptive narratives to understand phenomena and in form of words.
