Lecture 1 Flashcards
What is a Removable Partial Denture?
Removable Partial Denture
A dental prosthesis that restores one or more but not all of the natural
teeth and/or associated parts and is supported by the teeth and/or mucosa
and can be removed from the mouth and replaced at will; often referred to
as an RPD
What are the objectives of RPD?
Restore anatomical defect Restore function Restore occlusal plane Provide posterior occlusal support Improve esthetics Splint periodontally compromised teeth
What does the metal framework consist of?
Metal framework
- Major connector
- Minor connectors
- Rests
- Direct retainers
- Indirect retainers
What does the denture base consist of?
Denture base
-Replacement teeth
-Supporting base
Material
Denture base :
applies to where the teeth is missing
acrylic rests on edentulous area
What is the role of the Major Connector?
MAJOR CONNECTOR
The component of an RPD that joins the units on one
side of the dental arch with the units on the opposite
side
What consists of the Major Connector for the Maxillary part?
Palatal strap
Anterio-posterior Palatal Strap
Complete Palate
U-shaped (Horseshoe) connector
What consists of the Major Connector for the Mandibular part?
Lingual bar
Lingual plate
What is the role of the Minor Connector?
MINOR CONNECTOR
The connecting link between the major connector or base of a removable partial denture and the other units of the prosthesis, such as
direct and indirect retainers and rests.
What are the different types of Minor Connector?
MINOR CONNECTOR -Types - Guiding plane plates Meshwork – to hold acrylic resin Any unit connecting any type of rest to the major connector
Describe an example of how a Major Connector works:
Major connector should be connected to the occlusal rest,
Major connector connects to the retainer via the minor connector
What is referred to as Rest?
REST: A component of a removable partial
denture that serves to transfer forces
occurring against the prosthesis down
the long axis of the abutment teeth
Transfers to the partial denture
What is the Rest Seat?
REST SEAT: The prepared surface of a tooth or
restoration to receive the rest, not a part of framework
What is the Proximal Plate?
A rigid extension from the major connector
or base
Contacts the proximal surface of an
abutment tooth
The vertical portion of the retention plate~
What are Direct Retainers?
A component of a removable partial denture used to retain and prevent dislodgement
should not affect tissue or apply extra forces on the abutment teeth
