Lecture #1 Flashcards
1
Q
How is “Marine Biochemistry and Physiology” different from “Regular Biochemistry and Physiology”?
A
- differing situations derived from being surrounded by water
- gases, salinity, light, pressure, temperature, waste excretions, pollutants, locomotion
2
Q
What is the importance of Basic Research? What are some examples of Marine Biochemistry applications?
A
- fascinating, reveals interesting adaptations to extreme environments, never know where it will lead
- to fix things, we need to know how they work
- improves understanding of effects of stressors
- biotechnology (biofuels, aquaculture, etc…)
3
Q
What is homeostasis?
A
the ability of an organism to maintain internal stability in spite of metabolic and environmental disturbances
4
Q
Why does homeostasis require energy?
A
- costs energy to decrease entropy
- system tends toward entropy, keeping it stable means fighting against that
5
Q
What are the two main pathways of ATP production?
A
aerobic and anaerobic
