How do we disengage from valued goals and find new goals?
What is the Goal Adjustment Model?
Step 1: Consider your opportunities for success
Step 2: if they are good, continue your efforts and goal commitment, go to step 4
Step 3: if they are poor, disengage and engage in other goals
Step 4: Goal pursuit
Step 5: If you are having difficulty with goal attainment, go back to step 1
What is goal adjustment?
Disengagement from unattainable goals
- reduction of effort
- withdrawal of commitment
–> this prevents accumulated failure experience
reengagement in alternative goals
- identification of goals
- commitment to goals
pursuit of goals
–> this creates purpose in life
What are the benefits of goal disengagement?
low negative affect
low depressive symptoms
low perceived stress
few physical symptoms
efficient sleep
low diurnal cortisol
low C-reactive protein
reduces negative aspects of well-being and promotes biological and physical health
What are the benefits of goal reengagement after previous disengagement?
purpose in life
positive affect
low perceived stress
increases positive aspects of well-being
What is unrequited love?
romantic, passionate love that is felt by one person toward another person who feel substantially less attraction toward the lover
- a relationship that fails to form
Why might unrequited love happen?
falling upward
intrusion of romantic feelings into a platonic friendship
transition from casual dating to serious, possibly exclusive, romance
What is a dating relationship?
dating is a stage of romantic relationships in humans whereby two people meet socially with the aim of each assessing the other’s suitability as a prospective partner in an intimate relationship or marriage
it is a form of courtship, consisting of social activities done by the couple, either alone or with others
How is unrequited love experienced?
discrepancies between would-be lovers and rejecters accounts and emotions
What do successful and satisfied people know how to do?
both how to PERSIST and how to QUIT
