Lecture 01 - The brain Flashcards
What occurs in the frontal association cortex?
- Intelligence
- Personality
- Behaviour
- Mood
- Cognitive function
What occurs in the parietal association cortex?
• Spatial skills • 3D recognition - Shapes - Faces - Concepts - Abstract perception
What occurs in the temporal association cortex?
- Memory
- Mood
- Aggression
- Intelligence
What occurs in the non-dominant right hemisphere?
- Non-verbal language (e.g. body language)
- Emotional expression (tone of language)
- Spatial skills (3D)
- Conceptual understanding
- Artistic/Musical skills
what is a sulci?
grooves that seperate the grey matter
what is a gyri?
folding of grey matter
what are the four main sulci and where are they located?
central sulcus = divides frontal and parietal lobes
partieto-occipital sulcus =
lateral fisher = divides temporal from frontal and parietal lobes
Preoccipital notch = divides temporal and occipital lobe
what is the cerebral cortex?
A thick layer of brain tissue, folded to create gyri and sulci
what are the main gyri and where are they located? *lateral view
Precentral gyrus, postcentral gyrus
supra-marginal gyrus, angular gyrus
inferior temporal gyrus, temporal gyrus, superior temporal gyrus,
orbital gyrus, inferior frontal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, superior frontal gyrus
where are they speech and language functional regions located?
Dominant left hemisphere
