Lecture 01- Background & History Flashcards
What is histopathology and why should you be interested in it?
Science or study dealing with the cytologic and histologic structure of abnormal or diseased tissues. It is important so we understand what is normal and what isn’t.
What are the four basic types of tissues?
Epithelial, Connective, Muscle, Nervous
What type of tissue is contained in the ducts of glands?
Epithelium
What type of tissue is contained in skin?
Trick Question…could be all 4. But normally just epithelium & connective.
Tissue lining blood and lymphatic vessels?
Epithelial, but as you move outside there is more types.
Tissue contained in fat cells?
Connective
What type of tissues are RBCs and WBCs?
Connective
Type of tissue in kidney tubules?
Epithelial
What type of tissue is cartilage?
Connective
Tendons and ligaments are which type of tissue?
Connective
Which two histologists shared the 1906 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine? What did they do?
Santiago Ramon y Cajal and Camillo Golgi for their work with the structure of the nervous system. Ramon y Cajal made a correct interpretation of the neural structure of the brain and Golgi invented a staining method to visualize it.
Explain the role of Bichat and Virchow in establishing histology as it’s own discipline
Bichat (father of modern histology) contributed his perception that the diverse body organs contain particular tissues and membranes. He described 21 such tissues and brought anatomy down to the “tissue level.” Virchow proposed that “Omnis cellulae e cellulae” or that all cells originate from other cells.
Define Histology
Study of the microscopic anatomy of cells and tissues of plants and animals.
