What are Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Systems?
Incredibly large, extensive software packages used to manage a firm’s business processes.
Standard software packages that must be configured to meet the needs of a company

- Components of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP also known as heart of ES):
- FI/CO: Financial Accounting/Controlling Module (Tracking) (Also, known as heart of ERP)
- MM: Material Management (Buy)
- SD: Sales and Distribution (Sell)
- HR/HCM: Human Resource/ Human Capital Management (People)
- PP: Production Planning (Make)
- Components of Enterprise Systems (ES or Business Suite):
- SRM: Supplier Relationship Management (Sourcing)
- SCM: Supply Chain Management (Plan)
- CRM: Customer Relationship Management (Demand)
- PLM: Product Lifecycle Management (Idea)
Data Types
Master Data
Any data that describes an object
Data that is relatively stable
Materials, Customers, Vendors
Transaction Data
Data that is relatively temporary
Data processed during a transection
Customer orders, purchase orders, production orders, customer payments
Operational Data
- Data generated by your day to day operations - Stored at various stages of a business process (after transection is over)
Organizational Data
- Any data that describes an organization.
SAP Versions
SAP R/1
SAP R/1was the first version and it is one tier architecture in which three layers Presentation, Application and Database are installed in one system/server
Server one – Presentation + Application + Database
SAP R/2
SAP R/2 is the mainframe version of software and it is 2 tier architecture in which three layers Presentation, Application and Database are installed in two separate server.

SAP R/3
SAP R/3 is the client/server version of the software and it is 3 tier architecture in which three layers Presentation, Application and data base are installed in three server/system
Server one – Presentation, Server Two – Application, server Three – Database.
S4/HANA
4 layered architecture adding an in memory computing engine between Database and Applications. SAP S/4HANAis SAP’sERPfor large enterprises. It is the successor of R/3 and is optimized for SAP’s in-memory database.SAP HANA can be on premise, on cloud or a hybrid model.
S4/HANA Cloud
Adds the cloud structure between the users and applications.
