LEC3 Cardiovascular Blood Flashcards
3 functions of blood?
Blood carries nutrients and gases
1st function: Distribution of
a. O2 and nutrients to body cells
b. metabolic wastes to the lungs and kidneys for elimination
c. hormones from endocrine organs to target organs (all transported by blood)
3 functions of blood?
Blood carries nutrients and gases
2nd function: Regulation of
a. body temperature by absorbing
and distributing heat (cold=blood vessels constrict) (heat=blood vessels dilate)
b. normal pH= 7.4 using buffers
- bicarbonate
c. adequate fluid volume in the
circulatory system
3 functions of blood?
Blood carries nutrients and gases
3rd function: Protection against a. blood loss
- plasma proteins and platelets initiate clot formation
b. infection
- antibodies
-complement proteins
- WBCs defend against foreign invaders
Plasma makes up what percentage of blood?
55% of whole blood
Least dense component
Buffy coat makes up what percent of blood?
<1% of whole blood
Leukocytes and platelets
Erythrocytes (RBCs) make up what percent of blood?
45% of whole blood (hematocrit)
Most dense component
Plasma is considered what portion of blood?
Liquid portion
FIBRINOGEN AND SERUM
What kind of molecules are in plasma?
Organic and inorganic molecules
dissolved or suspended in water
a. very similar to ECF
What kind of proteins are located in plasma?
Various large plasma proteins
a. too large to leave the capillaries
b. maintain blood volume (mostly albumin) though osmosis
What are the major proteins in plasma?
- albumins (most common) a lack of this=edema
- globulins (antibodies)
- fibrinogen =lack hemophilia (coagulation=fibrin net)
- transferrin (iron uptake)
In plasma what are the nitrogenous by-products of metabolism?
Lactic acid, urea, creatinine
Plasma nutrients?
Glucose, carbs, amino acids
Electrolytes of plasma?
Na+, K+,Ca2+,Cl-,HCO3-
Respiratory gases of plasma?
O2 and CO2
Hormones
