LEC17: Osteoarthritis and Physical Activity Flashcards
What is the definition of arthritis?
Inflammation of the joint
- ‘arthr’ – joint
- ‘itis’ – inflammation
Approximately how many Canadians have arthritis?
6 million (~1 in 5)
Who does arthritis affect?
Affects people of all ages, physical abilities, and ethnicities
What is one of the leading causes of disability in Canada
Arthritis
What are the two types of arthritis?
- Inflammatory arthritis
- Degenerative arthritis
What is inflammatory arthritis?
An autoimmune disorder; an individual’s own antibodies attack tissue in the lining of the joint (i.e. synovial membrane)
ex. Rheumatoid arthritis
What is degenerative arthritis?
Wearing away and breakdown of cartilage
ex. Osteoarthritis (OA)
Joints affected by osteoarthritis (OA)
- End joints of fingers
- Middle joints of fingers
- Joint at base of thumb
- Hips
- Knees
- Joints at base of big toe
- Neck (cervical spine)
- Low back (lumbar spine)
What are the risk factors for osteoarthritis?
- Genetics
- Fractures or other joint injuries earlier in life (changes the biomechanics of the joint)
- Long-term overuse (occupational or sport related)
- Excess weight
What are the signs and symptoms of osteoarthritis?
- Pain in joints
- Decreased range of motion
- Joint deformity
- Muscle weakness around joints
- Changes in gait pattern
What entails pain in joints (osteoarthritis)?
- Gradual onset of pain in joints
- Pain can usually be relieved with rest
- Varied pain (often in relation to changes in the weather - the atmospheric pressure)
- Sometimes described as aching or throbbing
- Rubbing, grating, or crackling sound in joints
What are the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines for individuals with osteoarthritis?
They do not exist
- Follow the existing age-appropriate guidelines
- Exercise is highly recommended to manage symptoms
Individuals with osteoarthritis should be encouraged to do what?
Undertake regular aerobic, muscle strengthening, and range of motion exercises.
What are the benefits of aerobic exercise programs for older adults with osteoarthritis?
- Increased aerobic capacity
- Decreased depression and anxiety
- Decreased fatigue
- Increased muscular strength
- Decreased pain
- Overall improved function
What are the benefits of resistance training programs for older adults with osteoarthritis?
- Decreased stiffness
- Increased muscle strength
- Decreased pain
- Overall improved function
