Lec 7 Flashcards
what is vital pulp therapy?
tx to preserve compromised pulp that remains
-caries, trauma, iatrogenic procedures can compromise a pulp
what is an indirect pulp cap
material is placed on dentin to cover the pulp
-if it is removed, pulp could be exposed in immature perm teeth
do all caries need to be removed to place a pulp cap?
YES
-complete caries removal is necessary
-residual caries could compromise the pulp therapy
what is pulp exposure
opening in dentin that uncovers the pulp
carious pulp exposure involves what?
pulp exposure due to caries destroying tooth structure
mechanical pulp exposure involves what?
accidental pulp exposure due to the hand piece or hand tools
-absence of caries
traumatic pulp exposure occurs when?
pulp is exposed due to traumatic fracture of tooth
what is a pulp cap
treatment done by sealing the pulpal wound w/ CaOH or mineral trioxide aggregate MTA
-facilitates formation of reparative dentin and maintain vital pulp
what is a direct pulp cap
pulp cap placed directly on a vital pulp exposure
what is the procedure at UMKC for pulp exposure
if pulp is vital and is exposed:
-isolate tooth
-remove all remaining caries
-irrigate w/ 8.3% NaOCL
-place DYCAL on pulp exposure -place temporary restoration (IRM, PARACORE)
-fill out forms and contact endo
*MAKE SURE PULP IS ACTUALLY VITAL BEFORE**
what is a pulpotomy
pulp amputation
-removal of the coronal portion of vital pulp
-try to preserve the remaining vital pulp below
what is a partial pulpotomy
(Cvek pulpotomy)
removal of small portion of vital coronal pulp to preserve remaining pulp
-shallower
how long should bleeding last in the pulp?
2-3 min, need a pulp cap
over 10 min needs a pulpotomy or pulpectomy
what cells produce tertiary dentin?
Fibroblasts
what will you do if:
-pulp is bright red
-bleeding stops 2-3 min
can do a pulp cap
