Lec 6 Sensory Perception Flashcards
What are the common features that all sensory systems share
- Transduction
- Range
- Organization
- Hierarchical processing
what is transduction
Converting external stimuli into a signal
transduction of skin receptor work?
transduction of eyes work?
Transduction of hair cells work?
What is sensory adaptation?
What are the benefits of adaptation
1.Adaptation helps us to ignore constant,
innocuous stimuli, reducing distraction
2.Adaptation helps to avoid saturation of
neuronal firing rates, allowing us to detect
change in stimulus intensity over a larger range
of intensities and detect new stimuli even in the presence of old stimuli
What are the 6 types of skin receptors and their functions
Free nerve endings:
pain, temperature
Merkel’s disc:
edges of objects
Meissner’s corpuscles:
form of objects
Hair follicle:
when da hair touch
Ruffini:
stretch
Pacinian:
Vibration and pressure
Labelled line theory of senses
Each sensory system has a distinctive pathway from the periphery to the brain.
ex.
The dorsal column system delivers touch information
What is the dorsal column medial
Lemniscus system
It is a system that carries sensory information from our peripheral nervous system to our brain
What did Wilder Penfield do?
Stimulate part of brain to see what was causing seizures and then took it out ( burned toast thing)
What are the 3 levels of sensory organization of the brain
Primary Sensory Cortex:
Receives the majority of input directly from the Thalamic Relay nuclei system
Secondary Sensory Cortex:
Receives the majority of input directly from primary sensory cortex
Association Cortex:
Receives input from more than one area of our body
Hierarchal organization idk just know it
What does damage to association area of the brain do
u get more complex issues like main who thought his wife was his hat
