Q

The Greenhouse Gases

It’s not just CO2

A
  • Carbon dioxide (CO2)
  • Water vapor (H2O)
  • Methane (CH4)
  • Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
  • Ozone (O3)
  • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC’s)

Q

Do all greenhouse gases have the same effect? That is, does 1 unit of CO2 = 1 unit of O3?
A.Yes
B.No

A

B. No

Water vapor is a more natural cause of greenhouse gas (does not trap as much heat in our atmosphere as the other gasses)

the other 5 are more human-influenced

Q

Why is the difference between Climate

Change and Global Warming important?

A

The climate of each location on the Earth is going to change differently because of global warming.

The climate of Edmonton may get warmer, but
the UK may get colder (I’ll explain why later).

On average though, the planet is warmer.

Q

What areas have experience more climate change?

A

Temperate (Higher latitudes) have experienced worse climate change than tropical regions (lower latitudes)

Q

Future scenarios of climate change? (RCP scenarios)

A

RCP (2.6 or 1). medication of CO2 and cut down emissions

RCP (4.5 or 2). intermediate, keep emissions just below what they are now

RCP (6.0 or 3). intermediate, keep emissions slightly higher than they are now

RCP (8.5 or 4). emissions continue to increase at the rate it is already increasing

7
Q

So what will happen? (If we don’t change anything… RCP 8.5)

A

• The effects of climate change and global
warming are very location-specific.

• The climate and ecosystems of each area of
the globe are going to change differently
because of global warming.

Q

Where is all the CO2 coming from?

A

The biggest ones are China, USA (lots of industrial production)

Electricity, heat production, and agriculture/forestry are the major contributors… and industry

Q

Personal Energy Independence: How much would we need? (if you lived in Sunny place like Arizona)

A

you’ll need 53 square meters (574 sq ft) of 15 percent efficient solar panels.

If you spend the extra money for 21 percent efficient solar panels, then you’ll only need 38 square meters (409 sq ft) of solar panels.

Q

What about not in a sunny place like Vermont (not even as sunny as Alberta)

A

you’ll need 80 square meters (861 sq ft) of 15 percent efficient solar panels and 57 square meters (615 sq ft) of the 21 percent efficient ones.

16
Q

Biotic invaders?

A

Biotic invaders - species that establish a new range in which they proliferate, spread, and persist to the detriment of the environment

17
Q

Rank producers, consumers, and predator invaders. Which one has the biggest influence?

A

Producers: highest amount of invaders

Consumers: the intermediate amount of invaders

predators: lowest amount of invaders bt have the greatest impact

18
Q

Controlling invasive species through local
action to sustain ecosystem services (lionfish
case study)… explain

A

Complete eradication is unlikely so there is a shift from Eradication to suppression of the lionfish.

The goal is to make the most effective use
of limited resources to reduce lionfish population numbers.

The use of fishing derbies and fishing rodeos are used to help bring the number of lionfish down (have been shown to suppress lionfish)

19
Q

How can this catching and suppression of lionfish be maintained?

A

Developing a lionfish fishery… tie the depletion of important fish by lionfish to humans way of life. This is called the coupled ecological model.

20
Q

What 4 ecological models are implemented in the process of getting rid of lionfish?

A

Ecological assessment

Fisheries assessment

Invasive ASSESSMENT

SOCIAL MARKET ASSESSMENT
