Communication strategies
A
- Listen to what is actually being said, not what you want or expect to hear. Use reflective techniques and ask questions to check own understanding
- Be flexible, alter method or manner if necessary
- Avoid culturally insensitive language and behaviours- reflect back on conversations to monitor this
- Be open-minded enough to understand and consider different beliefs and views on the same situation
- Avoid stereotyping but use generalisations as a starting point to inform questions
