Lec. 1 Body Systems Flashcards
Components/Functions of Integumentary System
Components: skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, oil glands
Functions: protection, regulate body temperature, eliminate wastes
Components/Functions of Skeletal system
Components: bones, joints, associated cartilages
Functions: protection and support for body organs, assist with movement
Components/Functions of Muscular System
Components: skeletal muscle
Functions: movement, stabilize body, generate heat
Components/Functions of Nervous System
Components: brain, spinal cord, nerves, special sense organs (eyes and inner ear structures)
Functions: produce nerve impulses to regulate body activity, and detect, interpret, and respond to changes in the body’s internal and external environments
Components/Functions of Lymphatic system
Components: lymphatic vessels/ fluid, spleen, thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils
Functions: returns proteins and fluids to the blood, helps defend against disease
Components/Functions of Cardiovascular system
Components: heart, blood vessels, blood
Functions: carry oxygen and nutrients via blood to cells, transports CO2 and wastes away from cells and into lungs/ kidney for excretion
Components/Functions of
Respiratory system
Components: lungs, bronchial tubes, trachea, pharynx, larynx
Functions: transfers CO2 and oxygen between air and blood, voice production
Components/Functions of Digestive system
Components: mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (the digestive tract)
Liver, gall bladder, pancreas (secrete substances into the tract)
Functions: collectively break down food, absorb nutrients, eliminate wastes
Components/Functions of Urinary system
Components: kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, urethra
Functions: produces/eliminates urine, eliminates wastes, regulates production of red blood cells
Components/Functions of Reproductive system
Components: gonads (testes, ovaries) and sex associated organs (fallopian tubes, uterus, vagina, mammary glands / epididymis, ductus deferens, seminal vesicles, prostate, and penis
Functions: produces/stores gametes (sperm/oocytes), produces hormones
Components/Functions of Endocrine system
Components: hormone producing glands/cells
Functions: produce hormones to regulate body activity, respond to changes in body’s internal/external environments
Axial term meaning
Central part of body
Cephalic term meaning
Head
Antebrachial term meaning

What are the 4 large cavities in the body
- Cranial cavity
- Vertebral cavity
- Thoracic cavity
- Abdominopelvic cavity
What is the Thoracic cavity
- the trunk is separated into 2 cavity’s by the diaphragm muscle
- Thoracic is the upper trunk chest cavity which is subdivided into:
- pleural cavity
- Pericardial cavity
- Mediastinum
What is the Abdominopelvic cavity
- other half of the separated trunk cavities
- Lower trunk cavity that is subdivided into:
- abdominal cavity
- pelvic cavity
- they are separated by the pelvic inlet
Directional term: Ipsilateral
On same side of body
Directional term: Contralater
On opposite side of body
What are the 3 Cardinal Planes used to produce sections?
- Sagittal plane
- Frontal / Coronal plane
- Transverse plane
