Lec 1-3 Flashcards
Main components of computer networks (6)
1- Client computer 2- Server computer 3- Network Interface Cards (NICs) 4- Switches 5- Routers 6- Communication links (cables, antennas, etc)
What is the main difference between using router and switch?
Switch: Connects two or more computers to form a network (LAN)
Router: Connects networks together (ex: connect LAN with WAN)
4 Types of computer networks (categorized according to size)
PAN: Personal area network, range of few meters, bluetooth devices etc.
LAN: Local area network, usually network inside single building, for home or small business
MAN: Metropolitan Area Network, for city, spanning 1-30 kilometers
WAN: Wide Area Network, for connecting multiple states, companies, the world (internet)
State (and draw btw) what are the elements required to establish a communication link between two devices?
1) sender
2) receiver
3) protocol (draw above both of them)
4) medium (between them)
5) message (drawn above medium)
Explain half duplex connection
A connection in which communication can only happen in one direction at a time (like walkie-talkie)
What is full duplex connection
A connection in which communication can occur in both directions at the same time without data corruption (like telephone)
Simplex connection
Connection in which data flows in one direction only at all times. Ex: radio broadcast, tv broadcast, satellite tv broadcast, IR remote
