Leaves Flashcards
Cuticle
Reduces water loss
Stomata
Pores on the leaf that open and close to regulate water and gas exchange
Palisade Cells
These absorb light so photosynthesis can take place
Guard Cells
Surround each stoma to regulate the rate of transpiration
Upper Epidermis
It protects the leaf and aids in preventing water loss
Spongy Mesophyll
This allows for interchange of gases needed for photosynthesis throughout its large air spaces to make diffusion easier
Palisade Mesophyll
The main site of photosynthesis
Xylem
It transports water and dissolved ions
Phloem
It transports dissolved food from the leaves around the plant
Root Hair Cells
They collect water and mineral ions present in the soil and are long and thin so they can increase their surface area
Transpiration
The process of water movement through a plant and its evaporation from the leaves
