Leave Flashcards
What is the leave structure made of and what is their use
-waxy cuticle (To prevent water loss from the plant)
-upper / lowerepidermis (To protect the cells inside of the leave and to prevent water loss with tightly packed cells)
-Palisade Mesophyll (Tightly packed column shaped cells fill with chloroplast to conduct photosynthesis)
-Spongy mesophyll( Loosely pack cells, to allow gas exchange during the process of photosynthesis)
-Stoma/stomata ( Holes at the bottom of the leaves to allow gas exchange)
-Guard cell ( Open and close base on the environment) works together with the stomata
Vascular Bundle
-Xylem ( Transport water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant )
-Phloem ( Transport food/ starch/ glucose prepared during photosynthesis to the rest of the plant )
What is photosynthesis
The process of where green plants make food using sunlight to survive
What is the word and chemical equation of photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide + Water =(Sunlight, chlorophyll) = Glucose + Oxygen
6Co2 + 6H2O = C6H12O2+ 6O2
What is chlorophyll
A green pigment found within the chloroplast to convert sunlight to food for the plant
What is the use of carbohydrates for the plant
It use for the source of energy, strengthen cell walls and a food source.
What is extra carbohydrate stored as in a plant
They are stored as starch for later use
What can carbohydrate be converted too?
They can be converted to lipid and amino acid
What is lipid and amino acid use for in a plant
Lipid= Use as store energy ( Mostly use for seed germination)
Amino Acid= Help with growth and development of the plant
What is the use of chloroplast in photosynthesis
It is used to abosorb carbon dioxide which is an essential in photosynthesis
Features of the stomata
They close when they lose water and open up When it gains back water, the size of the stomata depends on the ability of water.
Why do stomata close on a hot sunny day
Even thought the stomata need to open during a hot sunny day so that they can conduct gas exchange in photosynthesis, they still have to close to conserve water and stop it from being evaporated away.
Why is the palisade cell arranged vertically
It is arranged vertically to maximize the absorption of light and it also increase the change of light hitting one of the chloroplast (as it longer in height . )
Why are the spongy mesophyll pack to loosely
It is pack loosely for space of gas exchange happening during photosynthesis.
What is the use of nitrate ion
It is use to make amino acid, enzymes for cell tissue growth and repair
What is the use of magnesium ion
It is use to make chlorophyll, which is essential for photosynthesis
