Learning Unit 3.1 Flashcards
Briefly explain the casting process.
In casting, metal is first melted in a suitable furnace.
The molten metal is poured in a cavity similar to the size of the object being made, where it is allowed to solidify.
After solidification, the cavity is destroyed to take out the solid object from it.
This solid object as well as the process are called casting.
What is the purpose of a Moulding flask?
Moulding flask is a container that keeps the entire casting component inside during the casting process.
Describe pattern in context of casting.
A pattern is the exact copy of the object to be made.
What materials are commonly used to crate patterns?
- Wood
- Metal
- Plastics
Name 3 materials commonly used to create a mold.
- Sand
- Metal
- Plaster
- Ceramic
Metallic molds are called permanent molds or dies. What is the major purpose of using metallic molds?
They are used for repetitive castings.
Why are certain patterns referred to as disposable patterns?
They are consumed (lost) in the process of making a casting.
