learning to drive chapter Flashcards
120h vs 50h of driving experience
-divers with 120h of driving experience have a 30% lowered chance of accidents.
-120h is the required amount for Vic drivers, but doesn’t guarantee the ability to drive safely, only extensive experience on the road will deepen his ability.
how do you best practice safety as a learner.
-plan practice and experience by using info in the learner’s kit.
-focus on practicing safe driving skills.
define hazard perception
the ability to:
-identify potential risks or dangers around you
-assess the level of risk and predict what might happen
-respond in a way and in time to avoid or deal with those potential hazards
what are examples of potential hazards?
-cars and motorcycles (and other vehicles) in proximity (front, rear, side)
-trucks in the general area, parked or moving.
-trains/trams/vehicles that will intercept your path.
-pedestrians and bicycle riders.
-weather conditions
-potholes
-traffic conditions
-tightness of a curve ahead
-over a hill when you can’t see what’s on the other side.
define a hazard
anything in the road environment that could present a danger or risk while driving.
when do you head check?
when:
-reversing
-changing lanes
-merging
-pulling out to overtake
what does a correctly adjusted mirror look like?
-there’s overlap between the inside and outside mirrors
-the edge of your car can just be seen
-be able to see the rear handle in the bottom corner of the side mirror.
stages in the learner’s kit
1.learn to control the car
2.apply new skills with other car users in an environment with little traffic
3.use stage 1 and 2 skills in busier areas, learn to deal with traffic and other hazards.
4.drive as if you’re a solo driver, make driving decisions yourself.
supervising driver roles
-act as an extra pair of eyes for the road.
-with some decisions
-as an early warning system to help anticipate potential hazards.
you and your supervising driver will need to:
-keep track of your progress
-plan driving sessions using the four-stage plan
-keep your learner logbook up to date and signed
-decide when you’re ready to move onto the next stage
-keep motivated to keep practicing all the way through the learning period
what do you do if your brakes fail?
1.pump on the brake handle hard and fast
2.apply the handbrake carefully so the handbrake doesn’t skid
3.if possible, change to a lower gear, and use your horn to alert other drivers
4.try to steer the vehicle so you avoid a severe collision
