learning theory of attachment Flashcards
what are the steps of classical conditioning
1) baby forms an association between the mother (NS) and food (US) which produces the feeling of pleasure (UCR)
2) overtime the caregiver becomes associated with the food
3) the mother becomes a conditioned stimulus and produces a conditioned response when the baby is fed (happy)
what are the steps of operant conditioning
1) child cries
2) triggers a response like the mother coming to comfort or feed the baby
3) the more this happens the more the action is reinforced, as the child associates the mother with those rewards
4) food is the primary reinforcer
5) the mother is the secondary reinforcer
one weakness of classical conditioning
contradictory evidence from animal studies
what did harlow demonstrate in his animals study
contact comfort was more important than food in the development of attachment
what did harlow find in the monkeys behaviour
they formed a primary attahment to the cloth-bond mother, regardless of which mother was dispensing milk
what did harlow study suggest
there is no unconditioned stimulus (of food)
