learning theory Flashcards
what is reinforcement
anything which has the effect of increasing the likelihood of the behaviour being repeated
what is positive reinforcement
anything which has the effect of increasing the likelihood of the behaviour being repeated by using consequences that are PLEASANT when they happen e.g. crying and being picked up
what is negative reinforcement
anything which has the effect of increasing the likelihood of the behaviour being repeated by using consequences that are pleasant when they stop e.g. putting on a jumper when its cold
what is Punishment
anything which has the effect of increasing the likelihood of the behaviour being repeated by using consequences that are UNPLEASANT when happen
Operant Conditioning for infants
- babies cry for comfort - this builds attachment because it leads to a response from the caregiver
- if the correct response is given, crying is reinforced
- the care giver responses with comforting ‘social suppressor’ behaviour
