How did you go about researching advise for patients travelling to high altitude?

A

Started by looking at an article in high altitude medicine and physiology. GP notebook had good sources of information on physiology. Then looked at pubmed to find systematic review on acetazolamide. Looked at individual studies for nifedipine.

What are your main conclusions and findings when researching high altiude medicine?

A

Acetazolamide is effective for prophylaxis and treatment of AMS. For the complications nifedipine shows no statistically significant effect compared to placebo for treatment but can be used for prophylaxis

A

Searched pubmed and found two systematic reviews and three further trials (2 RCTs, pilot study)

What were your main findings when you completed cranberry juice and UTIs?

A

First systematic review was no a statistically significant difference second showed selection of trials and bias. Smaller trials showed reduced bacterial adherance and not to be more effective than antibiotics. Very small sample size in pilot study. 180 dollars a month for cranberry juice.

A

Saw lots of homeless people in hospital medicine and was curious how they could access primary care without a home address

How did you research you homelessness learning prescription?

A

Started with statistics on homelessness in the UK from the goverment website on rough sleeping. Then looked at a cohort study from the european journal of public health on their self reported health after housing arrears. Then looked into some studies looking at the percieved barriers to healthcare that homeless feel.

What were your findings in your homelessness learning prescription?

A

Lower percieved health in housing arrears
Found that colder conditions increase risk of respiratory conditions
Found barriers to healthcare being difficult life circumstances leading to poor medication compliance, prejudice from medical professionals, not registered at GP
Solutions - housing first model, more cooperation between social and medical services

A

Pubmed search for trials, found the epidemiological data on location and MS and Birth date and risk of MS
Then looked at vit D and immunomodulation.

Systematic review of vit D suppleentation for people with MS
